What is the Wolfberry Oil Field?  The Wolfberry Oil Field is a section of the Permian Basin that is below the Spraberry field which is located in Texas.  The Wolfberry is referred to as the Wolfberry Trend, Wolfberry Formation, Wolfberry Shale, Wolfberry Field, Wolfberry Oil Play.   The Wolfberry gets it's name from the being in the Wolfcamp Shale below the Spraberry field.  Basically, the Wolfberry Shale is a tangling of the Spraberry Oil Field, Dean Formation, and the Wolfcamp Shale.  Companies use rigs to drill multiple zones in this field and just refer to this area as the Wolfberry.

Lower natural gas prices are causing drilling companies to abandon shale gas and flock to oil rich areas such as the Permian Basin.  To the east of the Permian Basin, we have the Spraberry Field and then the Wolfcamp Shale ( forming the Wolfberry ).  To the West, we have the Bone Spring Formation which is made up of the Avalon Shale, Bone Spring Oil Field, and then the Wolfcamp Shale.  The whole Permian Basin area is a large oil field....and in the very early stages.  Horizontal drilling, high oil prices, and new frack techniques allow companies to explore oil fields like never before.  Companies are buying mineral rights leases from landowners which is making them rich.  I've head that there are some areas in the Wolfberry selling for $15,000+ per acre with royalties on top of that.  The Wolfberry Trend is becoming one of the most sought after areas in the country right now.  We are seeing a huge increase of drilling rigs everywhere.  This land grab is similar to what we saw in the Eagle Ford Shale as well as what we are seeing in the Niobrara Shale right now.  Will the Wolfberry turn out to be another Bakken Formation?  Only time will tell.
